A Typical Day

7:30-8:25: Arrival and Brain Breakfast
Each morning the school leader will be waiting for students at the school’s threshold to greet each with a hand shake and a smile. Prior to entering Beacon College Prep, students are checked for appropriate uniforms to more efficiently uphold our rules and set the expectation of preparedness from the moment they arrive.

8:25-8:35: Morning Meeting
Students transition from breakfast to the carpet in their class and preview the day. They discuss rules, engage in culture building routines, and sing songs that reinforce positive character and kindness.

8:35-10:05 Literacy Block
Students engage in a variety of structures pertaining to literacy, including read alouds, guided reading, writing workshop, handwriting, independent reading, phonics instruction, or iReady on laptops.

10:05-11:05: Writing and Science
To accommodate the shift of State Standards to more informational text-based reading and writing, we pair our writing block with science. Students learn about our environment through scientific texts reflect through informational writing .

11:05-12:00: Specials Classes
BCP Students rotate through 4 specials classes that will both expand their horizons and deepen their talents and interests. BCP offers Computer Coding, Physical Education, Music & Dance instruction for kindergarten through 5th grade.

12:00-12:30: Lunch
After a long morning of learning, a healthy and safe lunch environment is just what our students need. School leadership and teachers eat lunch with students in the cafeteria to continue to get to know them, and to maintain cultural expectations through all points of the day.

12:30-1:00 : Recess!!
Many schools cut recess time from students because of the demands of the core curriculum: not us! We lengthen the school day so that we can still meet those rigorous demands while giving our students the time and space to be kids

1:00-2:30 : Mathematics
After lunch and recess, it is time to regain focus on academics and we start the afternoon with rigorous math instruction that develops our students conceptual understanding for real world applications of math.

2:30-3:25 : Social Studies
Our students learn about their identities in relation to our city, state, country and world through social studies. We partner with our families to raise socially conscious global citizens, and our social studies block is a perfect vehicle through which we can teach our students about good character and citizenship.

3:25-5:45 : Dismissal and after school programming
We offer a robust after school program that gives our students an opportunity to receive homework help, direct tutoring in math and science, and an opportunity to let loose with physical training and visual arts!
